Community meetingA hands-on journey with DAPP Namibia and Czech Aid to grow food, health, and resilience
May 2025

In Onambelela, 10 km east of Outapi, like in many parts of Namibia, families face the daily pressures of food insecurity and a changing climate. Traditional methods struggle to meet today’s needs, making it necessary to create lasting solutions that empower communities, not just for today, but for the future.

That is why DAPP Namibia, with support from Czech Aid, has launched a new community garden project in the heart of Onambelela, in the Omusati region. This is not just a garden, it is a partnership built on trust, local leadership, and shared purpose.

We have made land and water available at the DAPP Centre, and 40 dedicated community members have stepped up to be part of the change. They are guided by a garden committee chosen from among them, so that every voice matters and every action is rooted in the community’s vision.

The groundwork is already underway:

  • Fencing is up, protecting the garden from animals.
  • Sanitation facilities are being built to support health and dignity.
  • And most importantly, 2,400 seedlings - spinach, cabbage, okra, peppers, and kale have been planted. These crops will feed families and open doors to small-scale income.

But this project goes deeper than farming. It is about knowledge, resilience, and the power to thrive. Starting in June 2025, community members will begin training in horticulture and nutrition, using simple, trusted materials developed with NAFSAN (Nutrition and Food Security Alliance of Namibia). They will learn how to grow healthy food, how to protect the land, and how to care for their families in a changing climate.

The focus is clear: water-saving techniques, drought-resistant crops, and practical, people-led solutions.

This is how we adapt. This is how we grow.

At DAPP Namibia, we walk with our communities. We take action where it is needed most with courage, with unity, and with hope. Together with Czech Aid and the people of Onambelela, we are planting more than vegetables - we are planting a future that can stand strong through any storm.

Food. Health. Strength. Hope.
It all starts with a seed - and a community ready to grow. DAPP Namibia | In partnership with Czech Aid
